UCSC Dining wins Bronze for Manhattan Clam Chowder

February 20, 2016

UCSC Dining took home the 3rd place award for Best Professional Manhattan Clam Chowder at the 35th Annual Clam Chowder Cook-off at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk.

The Santa Cruz Clam Chowder Cook-Off and Festival has raised more than $1 million for City of Santa Cruz Parks and Recreation Department programs since it started in 1981.

Our chefs entered the competition in both Professional categories; the Chowder Sluggers prepared the Boston (white) chowder, and the Redwood Sluggers prepared the winning Manhattan (red) chowder.

The competition was tough, and each team had only three hours to prepare their chowders, before hundreds of festival-goers lined up to taste and judge their finished products. The Redwood Sluggers graciously accepted the award on the Beach Amphitheater stage.

Get a taste of both teams' chowders at the campus dining halls. Check the menus on the UCSC Dining website (dining.ucsc.edu) for upcoming dates.
